deer season update

Last weekend was spent hanging out in Georgetown, and it really was a great time. Despite the inclement weather we have been having around the Lowcountry, we managed to eek out a dove shoot and do a little pond fishing between rainstorms. I also made sure to check my trail cam, and do a little bit of scouting for deer season while I was there, just to see what kind of activity is going on now that the season is underway. Much to my delight, I had a handful of great videos & photos on my trail cam, found here.

lowcountry tarpon tournament – video

Happy Monday, friends! I have something rather exciting for you today. Do you remember when I mentioned that John and some guys fished in the Lowcountry Tarpon Tournament? Well, I finally had time to get through their GoPro footage of the weekend… As you can recall, we have been after the [apparently] elusive tarpon several times recently to no avail. I know, I know, Hollis. Quit telling us about how you didn’t actually catch a tarpon. Right?

oven-fried fish sandwich with tartar sauce … plus an update!

Has this fishing talk got you craving fish? While I am not exactly going to make grilled shark or fried stingray (and obviously no chance of smoked tarpon… just kidding), it definitely got me in the mindset of a good fish sandwich. And no, I would not ever make any of the above. But you get the idea, right? I resorted to the failed-fishing route and purchased a nice big piece of grouper.

excellent sharkmanship

Yes, it’s what you think. We had it all planned out: Labor Day weekend was going to be it. My dad came down to fish with us, along with our neighbor and one of John’s coworkers, who also brought his son. We prepped on Saturday afternoon, getting the Sea Hunt (“Marmaduke‘s Revenge”) ready with all of our tackle & gear for the next day. We went to be early the night before, planning to be up and at ’em around 5 am and have the boat in the water by 6 am 6:25 am. Check. Out near the jetties part Charleston Harbor looking for bait by 6:30 7:15 am. Check.

rusty

It’s almost the weekend, friends! Anyone have some fun plans? It’s apparently supposed to rain here all weekend… Boo. At least the weather held up the past few days, as I was able to go on my first dove hunt of the season this week. With every season opener, I remember how much I really love dove hunting. Usually…

excellent raymanship

If you follow me on Instagram, you might remember that after my deer hunt last Saturday, I had plans to try and hook a tarpon. I was lucky enough to get an invite on the boat with John’s dad and some friends, having been left ashore by the rest of the boys participating in the Lowcountry Tarpon Tournament. It’s ok, guys… I guess. Just kidding. It was [still] a super hot day and the ocean breeze is exactly what I was needing.

first crossbow attempt

So it was hot last weekend. Below is what my car read when I got on the road to head to Georgetown, loaded down with deer hunting gear, the crossbow, Marmaduke and Prine, and just the general accoutrement that comes with heading out of town to hunt, fish, and enjoy the weekend. I don’t know why, but I always seem to look like the Clampetts when I travel. Add John and his gear to the mix? Where’s my Suburban?

deer season: opening day 2014

It is here – opening day of deer season for 2014. Woohoo! Well, I take that back. It’s opening day for some of us. Others will have to wait 2 more weeks until September 1st. Sorry, non-bow hunting friends (I don’t bow hunt… Yet).. The two places I do most of my deer hunting are in game zones 5 & 6, and game zone 6 comes with an August 15th opener. Click the map to learn more about your game zone, and here to learn more about each zone’s hunting regulations.

they did it!

If you remember last week’s recap of the Governor’s Cup Series so far, you’ll know that the Rascal was leading the pack in series points going into the Edisto Tournament. Our boys caught 3 sailfish & 1 blue marlin for the tournament, landing them in 2nd place behind the boat Trick ‘Em (48). They were neck and neck going into day 3 of the tournament, but the winning boat edged ahead with their 2 blue marlin over the Rascal’s 2 sailfish in the end. Either way, they all deserve a big congrats!
