deals, steals, & what I’m after at the moment

Happy Monday, friends! So, this post may come as a little bit of a shock – a random “shopping” post, if you will. But, I just couldn’t resist passing along some of the great hunting, fishing, and general outdoor apparel/gear sales going on around the interweb. Got a travel bug? Got you covered. Need an update to your well-word duck hunting gear? Look no further. Heading out for a fun fall skeet shoot? It can be 85* or 55* on a fall day around here – Layer up! Girls – there is some great stuff out there for hunters AND non-hunters alike! So, just what am I looking for this year?

Governor’s Cup: Update

Well, it has officially begun – the last tournament in the 2014 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series, the Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament. Our boys aboard the Rascal are fishing today, along with 9 other boats. They will have 2 out of 3 days to fish between today and Saturday, with the last awards banquet taking place Saturday night. What all has been caught so far, you ask? Check it out.

So, where does everyone stand overall?

top 5 signs every deer hunter should look for

Hello, friends! I sat down to finish this post last night and realized how long it has been since I have posted. This summer is doing 2 things – passing so quickly that I don’t realize how much time is flying, and dragging on until the next hunting season. This has really been such a busy summer that even leisurely fishing opportunities seem far and few between. Ahh, such is life. I guess it could be worse!

America

A few months ago, while we were shed hunting, I noticed a bald eagle circling high above us monitoring the waters of Winyah Bay and the Intracoastal. Occasionally, it would dip out of sight behind the marsh grass as it dove for a fish. I kept hearing another eagle’s call (well, scream, really – such an intimidating noise), but couldn’t figure out where the noise was coming from. Taking  my shed hunt to another area, a little further from the water, I spotted the eagle again, sitting high on an outstretched pine tree branch. I got my binoculars out to zoom in for a better look, and noticed the big ol’ bird was eying a nearby pine.

perfect timing – weekend recap

You know… Sometimes things just work out exactly like they should. And when it comes to potential injury being avoided, that’s always a good thing in my book. With the exception of 1 or 2 friends (Reebs, love you, glad your foot is cast-less!), I am one of the most accident-prone people I know. Most of the time, it’s because I am being an idiot, but other instances prove [somehow] unavoidable.

honey thyme muffins

Are you ready for a delicious breakfast recipe that’s perfect for hot summer mornings? I made these honey & thyme muffins a couple of weeks ago for the guys aboard the Rascal for the Bohicket Tournament, and they were a hit! In fact, they’re currently out in the open ocean fishing in the Carolina Billfish Classic. These grab and go muffins are light and fluffy, with a touch of tang and just enough sweetness – a perfect way to start your early morning trek off-shore. Grab one and get fishing!

what to do with sheds – part I

I have had quite a few people ask me exactly what I do with the sheds I find. Whether I find single sheds to the ever-exciting pair, I like to experiment with a handful the never ending possibilities of what you can do with these things – from chandeliers to chairs to a simple sit-about. I tend to take a less-is-more approach, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create something fantastic. So, I  figured I would give you a little miniseries and some DIY for all those sheds you find!

grilled cobia 2 ways

So! As I mentioned yesterday, our pal Elliott was nice enough to bring over some fresh cobia from his successful fishing adventure for us to grill (Thanks again, dude!). He brought over enough for us to have 2 big pieces each, with a couple left over (hello, lunch the next day). With a pretty hefty amount of fish to grill, we tried it 2 different but very complimentary ways. Both are incredibly simple and delicious, and I promise you’ll want to snag yourself some cobia to give these recipes a try!
