turkey hunting tips for opening day

Happy Opening Day (No. 2), friends! I came across this Field & Stream article for 2014’s turkey hunting season, and thought it was a good one to pass along. Now, these guys are way more hard core than I could ever hope to be {think cross-country conditioning and using 2 mouth calls simultaneously.. How? No idea}, but they offer some great tips for your turkey hunting adventures. Below are the 3 that apply to me the most, and are definitely tips I need to remember once I get out into the woods. Incidentally, two involve being patient once you’re out there. When it comes to still-hunting deer or hogs, I am typically pretty good at hanging tight and being patient. Not turkey hunting. Perhaps its because I have turkey hunted 20-30 times and haven’t taken a shot, but that’s neither here nor there! I really get antsy with anticipation and sometimes it gets the best of me. Definitely check out these tips – There are bound to be a few that work for you, as well!

California, Part I – Monterey & Carmel

At last! I have been dying for time to write this post. Things on the east coast were non stop once we made it back from the west coast, but I haven’t stopped talking about the trip. John and I headed out to Monterey, California in mid-March to visit two dear friends, Anne and Douglas who are currently living in that adorable town. Remember these two? How could you forget?! In fact, we actually planned this trip out to see them before any of us were positive they were moving. Chances were good, but not definite. What would have happened if they hadn’t made the move? Well, Anne and Doug were just going to purchase tickets and head out there with us for a few days of touristy travel. Win, win, huh?

quail pilau

Hello, friends! Did this weekend fly by for anyone else? Whew. How is it Monday? Well, we are undoubtedly in for at least one more cold snap in the weather, despite the summertime feel we have had the past several days, and I have the perfect recipe for you to enjoy. This quail pilau is easy, and feeds a crowd if you need it to do so. I made it before we went to California about 2 weeks ago, and it was a delightful comfort food before we left home. PS – When can we go back?

the essentials: turkey hunting

It’s almost here. Well, for some, it’s already here! Whether your county opened on the 15th, or you’ve got to wait until April 1st, let’s make sure we’re all prepared for turkey season. Last season was fairly slow on the turkey hunting front, but we have some great hunts lined up for this spring. Now, we all know I am a list maker to the extreme, and I always want to be prepared ahead of time for whatever is coming my way (at least when it comes to this sort of thing!). So, let’s get prepared for our adventures!

weekend recap: delayed

Holy moly this week has been crazy. As of right now, we are westward bound to visit dear friends in California {insert excited dance here}, so the start of this week meant playing catch up & get ahead before our vacation started. {PS – it’s 12* in Chicago right now.} Hence, the delayed post about the weekend! If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed a few posts of a few different activities, one of which I was verryyyy excited about. Remember all of my shed hunting talk? Well, it’s safe to say that my miles of walking finally paid off. I found my best shed yet, and what’s even more exciting, I found the pair. The miles and miles of walking sure were fun, even when we weren’t finding sheds.

the essentials: shed hunting

The time has come! While shed hunting “season” might not be on DNR’s calendar, it is certainly on mine. Didn’t bag a buck last season? Guess what – you still have a chance to come home with some nice antlers to add to your collection. Bucks drop their antlers every winter (more on that here), so now is a great time to look for their sheds. Finding sheds is always fun, and they can be very educational. Stumble upon one side of a nice 8 point’s rack? Then you know that buck made it through the hunting season and will {hopefully} be around next year. I am admittedly a fairly recent convert, but shed hunting is my new favorite activity between seasons or when hunting one day isn’t an option. So, here is my rundown of how to prepare for and carry out a successful shed hunting mission. That sounded really militaristic for some reason… Anyways – Time to get prepped.
