At last! I bring you: the first split of duck season 2016.
hard work paid off
Oh golly.
bright side outdoors turns 4!
It’s strange – I feel like I’ve been writing the bright side of the road my entire life, yet somehow feel like I just started it. And 4 years have gone by since I published my first post? Madness!
So, in honor of this website’s birthday, here are the top 9 posts in its 4th year of existence. They’re in no particular order, but click the links below and reminisce with me!
Transition from Dove Season to Duck Season with the WON
The weather is finally cooling off, and we’re just a few days from the opening of our 2016 duck season. Woohoo!
Coloring Girl
Do you ever find yourself needing a way to get some creativity flowing? Or maybe you’re bored at home (or work!) and need something to occupy your mind? I’ve got just what you need!
I am super excited to have been asked to be the Featured Coloring Girl for October over at The WON, created by the crazy-talented Kimberly Kolb Eakin. Just wait until you see what she came up with.
lady dog
I have to admit, this one took me a little while just to be able to write. As you may have seen, a couple weeks ago we lost a beloved member of the Johnston family – miss Dixie dog made her way to Rainbow Bridge after a steady decline over the past few months. It definitely hit me harder than I was anticipating, and I found myself crying the whole way through this post the first few times I sat down to write it.
dove season prep with the WON
Can you believe it’s already fall? I feel like I was just writing my paddle board fishing article, reminiscing of 100* days on the water, and all of a sudden we’re staring down the barrel of dove season. Craziness! I know I owe y’all more than a few posts (Scotland, current and upcoming dove hunts, and an all new Portfolio page I’ve been working on), but I have another WON article on deck for you today!
Get excited for Dove Hunting 101: How to Prep Before you Head out for the Hunt.
trail cam tips with the WON
Happy deer season, friends! We’ve been open for a few weeks now in game zone 3, but just 5 days in zone 4, and I’ve already seen plenty of amazing photos from successful hunts around the interweb. Are you one of the lucky hunters to have bagged a buck in velvet this year? If so, I’m jealous! We’ve still got some time before the season opens on does and, since I bagged such a nice buck last year, I am definitely going to be more fastidious this season if another buck presents himself. But, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been paying attention to the woods juuuuust in case! In my latest article for Women’s Outdoor News, I go over some helpful tips on how you can get the most out of your trail cameras and have a successful deer season as a result!
paddle board fishing with the WON
Yes, the time has come – summer on the water! I’ve been fishing a fair amount this summer, and was super excited to get a new Jimmy Styks board at the end of June – just in time for a long Independence Day weekend in Georgetown. You might have seen on Instagram that I recently partnered with Women’s Outdoor News as one of their columnists – woohoo! I was previously on their Featured Blogger list (and was beyond delighted to be included), but now an actual columnist for them??
Patagonia Red Stag: Part IV
First of all – happy Friday, friends! Second – WOW. I had no idea it had been so long since I told you about the third installment of our Patagonia red stag adventure. Seriously, where is the time going!? Where did we leave off? Ah yes, we were on the hunt for dad’s stag (which, don’t forget, has since been found).
