For turkey hunters, springtime means hearing that unmistakable gobble through the cold morning mist. It startles us, jolting our brains and flooding our bodies with adrenaline. It’s an exciting feeling, to say the least. But, getting there—to where that gobbler is—takes some prep work.

shed hunting with the WON
I recently shared some shed hunting pointers over at Women’s Outdoor News – expanding on my original list of tips and tricks – how you, too, can have a successful shed hunting season.
gear review: Girls with Guns Clothing Waterfowl Jacket
I was lucky enough to be put in contact with the ladies at Girls With Guns through Women’s Outdoor News to review some of their gear, the Waterfowl Jacket in particular. I am an avid duck hunter and typically hunt several times a week during the season, so having the right gear (and good gear) is important to me. At 5’10, I am definitely on the tall side, so many women’s hunting clothing does not fit me very well. I often find myself in men’s hunting clothes so the torso & arm lengths are adequate.
Transition from Dove Season to Duck Season with the WON
The weather is finally cooling off, and we’re just a few days from the opening of our 2016 duck season. Woohoo!

dove season prep with the WON
Can you believe it’s already fall? I feel like I was just writing my paddle board fishing article, reminiscing of 100* days on the water, and all of a sudden we’re staring down the barrel of dove season. Craziness! I know I owe y’all more than a few posts (Scotland, current and upcoming dove hunts, and an all new Portfolio page I’ve been working on), but I have another WON article on deck for you today!
Get excited for Dove Hunting 101: How to Prep Before you Head out for the Hunt.
trail cam tips with the WON
Happy deer season, friends! We’ve been open for a few weeks now in game zone 3, but just 5 days in zone 4, and I’ve already seen plenty of amazing photos from successful hunts around the interweb. Are you one of the lucky hunters to have bagged a buck in velvet this year? If so, I’m jealous! We’ve still got some time before the season opens on does and, since I bagged such a nice buck last year, I am definitely going to be more fastidious this season if another buck presents himself. But, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been paying attention to the woods juuuuust in case! In my latest article for Women’s Outdoor News, I go over some helpful tips on how you can get the most out of your trail cameras and have a successful deer season as a result!
paddle board fishing with the WON
Yes, the time has come – summer on the water! I’ve been fishing a fair amount this summer, and was super excited to get a new Jimmy Styks board at the end of June – just in time for a long Independence Day weekend in Georgetown. You might have seen on Instagram that I recently partnered with Women’s Outdoor News as one of their columnists – woohoo! I was previously on their Featured Blogger list (and was beyond delighted to be included), but now an actual columnist for them??
tideline magazine feature: traveling to hunt & fish
Recently I was lucky enough to be contacted by Ashley McGee, a freelance writer for the Post & Courier, about my outdoor travel experiences. Her story – to be published in Tideline Magazine, would focus on Lowcountry residents who travel outside of the state to hunt and/or fish, and I was thrilled to be a part of it!
radio interview with jim reynolds outdoors
Happy Tuesday, friends! I hope everyone had a delightful weekend.
I’m taking a quick break in the Patagonia posts to bring you something entirely new. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to do an interview with Jim Reynolds, of Jim Reynolds Outdoors. He found Bright Side Outdoors through Women’s Outdoor News, and reached out to me to do an interview for his radio show. Pretty neat stuff, huh? Needless to say, I jumped at the opportunity!
