oven-fried fish sandwich with tartar sauce … plus an update!

Has this fishing talk got you craving fish? While I am not exactly going to make grilled shark or fried stingray (and obviously no chance of smoked tarpon… just kidding), it definitely got me in the mindset of a good fish sandwich. And no, I would not ever make any of the above. But you get the idea, right? I resorted to the failed-fishing route and purchased a nice big piece of grouper.

excellent sharkmanship

Yes, it’s what you think. We had it all planned out: Labor Day weekend was going to be it. My dad came down to fish with us, along with our neighbor and one of John’s coworkers, who also brought his son. We prepped on Saturday afternoon, getting the Sea Hunt (“Marmaduke‘s Revenge”) ready with all of our tackle & gear for the next day. We went to be early the night before, planning to be up and at ’em around 5 am and have the boat in the water by 6 am 6:25 am. Check. Out near the jetties part Charleston Harbor looking for bait by 6:30 7:15 am. Check.

excellent raymanship

If you follow me on Instagram, you might remember that after my deer hunt last Saturday, I had plans to try and hook a tarpon. I was lucky enough to get an invite on the boat with John’s dad and some friends, having been left ashore by the rest of the boys participating in the Lowcountry Tarpon Tournament. It’s ok, guys… I guess. Just kidding. It was [still] a super hot day and the ocean breeze is exactly what I was needing.

they did it!

If you remember last week’s recap of the Governor’s Cup Series so far, you’ll know that the Rascal was leading the pack in series points going into the Edisto Tournament. Our boys caught 3 sailfish & 1 blue marlin for the tournament, landing them in 2nd place behind the boat Trick ‘Em (48). They were neck and neck going into day 3 of the tournament, but the winning boat edged ahead with their 2 blue marlin over the Rascal’s 2 sailfish in the end. Either way, they all deserve a big congrats!

Governor’s Cup: Update

Well, it has officially begun – the last tournament in the 2014 South Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing Series, the Edisto Marina Billfish Tournament. Our boys aboard the Rascal are fishing today, along with 9 other boats. They will have 2 out of 3 days to fish between today and Saturday, with the last awards banquet taking place Saturday night. What all has been caught so far, you ask? Check it out.

So, where does everyone stand overall?

grilled cobia 2 ways

So! As I mentioned yesterday, our pal Elliott was nice enough to bring over some fresh cobia from his successful fishing adventure for us to grill (Thanks again, dude!). He brought over enough for us to have 2 big pieces each, with a couple left over (hello, lunch the next day). With a pretty hefty amount of fish to grill, we tried it 2 different but very complimentary ways. Both are incredibly simple and delicious, and I promise you’ll want to snag yourself some cobia to give these recipes a try!

Costa Rica 2012 & a farewell to friends

Happy Thursday, friends! I have been waiting to do this little #tbt for a while now, rather than stick it in the lineup directly after the previous Costa Rica #tbt and be oh so predictable. This one comes at the same time that two of our very dear friends, Anne and Douglas, have officially started their cross-country trek on their move to California for the next year via a new job for Douglas {eek!}. And while we are all so excited for them (and can’t wait to visit in March), it was hard to say goodbye see ya later nonetheless. So, in dedication to the Marions, I give you the #tbt to our Costa Rica trip in 2012!

Roll back to February 25, 2012, and we began our fun by celebrating John’s birthday with cocktails on the plane, and a cake when we arrived. A full week filled with sunshine, lots of fishing (and catching!), good food, too much beer, and thousands of photos later, we created memories on a trip that we won’t soon forget. There ended up being 12 of us total, staying in the same house as our trip in 2011, and doing our fishing off of both Frenzy boats again out of Marina Pez Vela. With such a large group, we all rotated on fishing based on how much we wanted to fish/which boat we were able to book for a given day. I am so glad the same crew is still there, too, as they really made the experience as fun as it could possibly have been. Some days were slower than others, as it always is with fishing, but we never came home empty-handed. In fact, every single person was able to land at least 1 sail, a first for many of the group. Another first? Swimming with a caught sail. Right in the water with him, holding onto his bill! Because of the trauma caused to the fish bringing it up on the boat, that is no longer an option for an angler’s photo op. I feel very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to do so the previous year, but absolutely cannot disagree with the new practice. I know I speak for everyone when I say that is was such an amazing rush to jump into the vast ocean and swim with a wild beast of a fish. Another outing resulted in a deliciously large tuna, which we prepared for dinner that night. Swimming at 2 pm, on the table by 8. You really can’t beat that, huh?

With John and I having so recently been to Costa Rica, it was easy to plan out both our days and nights, from figuring out meals for 12 to what adventures we could partake in on our days off from fishing. As luck would have it, there was one day that the boats were booked, giving the whole group a chance to head off together on a zip-line adventure. Not everyone was on board with the adrenaline-filled excursion at first (you know who you are :)), but it ended up being so much fun. Other days off were spent enjoying cocktails on the beach, eating local food in little roadside restaurants, exploring Manuel Antonio National Park, and even a little beach/rain forest horseback ride.

Literally 5000 photos later and 25+ caught sails under our belts, we headed back home, sun-burned tanned faces, mild hangovers, and huge smiles. Here is just a taste of our adventure. Enjoy!

Bohicket: blue marlin wants in

Hi friends! It’s been a busy week around here, and time completely slipped by me after spending some time at the Bohicket Tournament last weekend hanging out with the main squeeze and the Rascal crew. For a little fun, I loaned them my GoPro so they could get some amazing photos/videos, and could not wait to see what they came back with. To my excitement, they did not disappoint! With tropical storm Andrea making her way up the coast, everyone was nervous about whether or not any boats would be able to fish at all. They were able to, though, and set out bright stormy and early in the rain. That evening, soaked to the bone, the Rascal crew returned to the dock, flying 2 released sail fish flags and 1 released blue marlin flag. Woo! I arrived a little after 7 and we sat down to go through the videos. A few minutes in, we stumbled across this gem. It was taken during the wiring, landing, and release of the blue marlin, and cracks us up every time.
