I was lucky enough to be put in contact with the ladies at Girls With Guns through Women’s Outdoor News to review some of their gear, the Waterfowl Jacket in particular. I am an avid duck hunter and typically hunt several times a week during the season, so having the right gear (and good gear) is important to me. At 5’10, I am definitely on the tall side, so many women’s hunting clothing does not fit me very well. I often find myself in men’s hunting clothes so the torso & arm lengths are adequate.

second split begins
It’s hard to believe we are in the home stretch of duck season – I feel like we just started the second split. I’m not entirely sure where January has gone. Did Christmas really happen?
Oh yes, and we’ve seen lots of ducks in the meantime.
weekend recap: Oakland Quail Hunt
In December John and I were super fortunate to be invited on a weekend of quail hunting at a place called Oakland Club here in South Carolina. Thanks to the Evans (close family friends), we were in for two days of over-under toting, blaze-orange clad, horseback riding quail adventure.
Holy smokes it was fun.
the end of deer season: eyes on the prize
Well, we are officially into 2017. Happy New Year Friends! It’s interesting… Sometimes deer season seems to slowly fizzle out as we approach the final day – January 1st – here in South Carolina. With all of the excitement and activity surrounding duck season and the hunts each week and weekend, going after deer sometimes gets put on the back burner. Sure, I always get in the woods in the evenings before and after a duck hunt, hoping to see a nice buck or just bag a doe so we can all have some meat. And I thought that’s how this year’s season was going to end.
But… Sometimes, deer season doesn’t fizzle out.

bright side outdoors turns 4!
It’s strange – I feel like I’ve been writing the bright side of the road my entire life, yet somehow feel like I just started it. And 4 years have gone by since I published my first post? Madness!
So, in honor of this website’s birthday, here are the top 9 posts in its 4th year of existence. They’re in no particular order, but click the links below and reminisce with me!
Transition from Dove Season to Duck Season with the WON
The weather is finally cooling off, and we’re just a few days from the opening of our 2016 duck season. Woohoo!
lady dog
I have to admit, this one took me a little while just to be able to write. As you may have seen, a couple weeks ago we lost a beloved member of the Johnston family – miss Dixie dog made her way to Rainbow Bridge after a steady decline over the past few months. It definitely hit me harder than I was anticipating, and I found myself crying the whole way through this post the first few times I sat down to write it.
