If you saw this post, you’ll remember that shooting skeet is not only fun, but a practical activity when it comes to maintaining your shooting skills. [Side note: maybe I should have practiced more before dove season started? More on that tomorrow…] Well, towers and traps can get kind of boring, particularly when you are familiar with where you’re shooting & have a pretty good idea of where the target will go. I say “boring,” rather than “easy” because we all have days that we just can’t hit an “easy” shot, or the broad side of a barn.

back & forth – weekend recap continued
As I mentioned, we did a little bit of dove hunting and a little bit of fishing over last weekend. The constantly changing weather made it a little difficult to plan ahead for our activities, so we basically flew by the seat of our pants. Start to see a few doves come into the field? Let’s get out there and sit. No doves flying? Let’s try our luck on the pond. Procrastinating getting in the car to drive back to Charleston? Let’s get back in that dove field for a little while! That is truly how our day went.
rusty
It’s almost the weekend, friends! Anyone have some fun plans? It’s apparently supposed to rain here all weekend… Boo. At least the weather held up the past few days, as I was able to go on my first dove hunt of the season this week. With every season opener, I remember how much I really love dove hunting. Usually…
dove season news
Did you see the SCNDR News update about this year’s SC dove season? We officially get an extra 20 days of hunting! This is exciting news to me – particularly since this fall is filled to the brim with engagement/wedding festivities. [Side note – we have 5 weddings in October alone, including our own… Exactly.]
mr. alligator & me – shooter #2
On to the second part of our day of gator hunting! It was back down to the duck ponds to hunt for my gator and, once again, we saw dozens of gators. After about 30 minutes of {carefully} exploring the banks and edges of the ponds, I saw an odd looking mass about 70 yards ahead of us through the reeds. I put the scope up to be sure of what could perhaps have been a log (yes, I’ve had that scare before – just about jumped out of my waders when I saw… a stump).

the essentials: turkey hunting
It’s almost here. Well, for some, it’s already here! Whether your county opened on the 15th, or you’ve got to wait until April 1st, let’s make sure we’re all prepared for turkey season. Last season was fairly slow on the turkey hunting front, but we have some great hunts lined up for this spring. Now, we all know I am a list maker to the extreme, and I always want to be prepared ahead of time for whatever is coming my way (at least when it comes to this sort of thing!). So, let’s get prepared for our adventures!
snipe hunt
Happy Wednesday! I must admit, I am moving a tad slow this morning… Perhaps too much vino celebrating last night? No way. After an incredible weekend celebrating these two love birds (I am still sore from dancing), I’d say a detox is in order, no? What other activities occurred over the weekend, you ask? A little four-wheeler riding, a little shed hunting, and an impromptu snipe hunt.
VIDEO DIARY: duck season 2013-2014
Happy Thursday, outdoors-friends! I have to say, this chilly weather we’re experiencing around here has been oh-so-perfect for sitting at home in warm clothes by the fire, working on… THIS! Slowly but surely, I have been piecing together our GoPro footage for the 2013-2014 duck season video diary. I have to admit, I think video diaries are such a fun way to relive trips and hunting seasons – photos are a great keepsake, but there is something about the action of real footage that takes me back to each and every hunt. I think I have watched this one about 10 times this morning, my smile never fading each time I restart it.
the luck of the draw
Isn’t that what it’s about? The luck of the draw – Just when you think you have figured out what the ducks (or doves, deer, etc.) are going to do, they do something different. That’s exactly what happened to us Saturday morning in the duck ponds. John had a few guys from work out to hunt, so he really wanted to get them some shooting. With 2 other groups of hunters going out into the ponds, we had enough people to keep ducks moving (or so we thought), and that no one pond would be much better/worse than the others.
